So God created man in His own image…”

-Genesis 1:27 NKJV

We can assume with a great deal of confidence that when God created us in His image that He first gave us our spirit. Why? Because when God created Adam, He (God) had never been flesh. Now, we also know that a day to God, can be like a thousand years to us, so while the Word says He created man on the sixth day, we don’t really know how long that actually was. But if we KNOW anything about God, we know that He never has to rush because He has no deadlines. So we should be confident that He took His time in crafting His very first man. Much like we pour our hearts out to God,  we can imagine He did the same when creating us. God molded the spirit He desired for all of His children.

Unlike us, God has the power to choose the characteristics we need to live out His Purpose. Things like strength, resilience, and ambition; but also, the desire to give and receive love, the spirit of discernment, the ability to be compassionate and to empathize with others. The one thing He placed in us that truly speaks to how much He truly loves us: free will. He wants us to choose to follow Him, to love Him, to live out His Purpose in our lives.

The holy spirit, within us, is a direct connection to the Father. It is God dwelling inside of us. The Holy spirit intercedes on our behalf when we don’t know what to pray for, when the physical or emotional pain has become unbearable, or when there are just no words to express the emotions raging through our flesh. The spirit God poured into us serves as our conscience, no matter how far we stray from God, it is there to remind us of who He intended for us to be. It is the core of who we are, who God created us to be. It is crafted by the creator, and therefore unbreakable by man.

Your spirit is the most powerful part of your being. It embodies your level of determination, your ambition, your true character, and your moral compass. Your spirit is not what makes you a good Christian, but what makes you thirst for the greatness of God. It rises up and falls back depending on the level in which we allow our emotions or flesh to get the best of us. We all recognize that deep, unsettling spiritual feeling.
It is imperative to our mental and spiritual well being that we recognize these things about our spirit:

  1. Our Spirit is a direct connection to our Heavenly Father. All of His power, strength, wisdom, and love.
  2. Our Spirit was created before every other part of us. Therefore, we must make it our first priority. Even when our flesh and feelings are failing us.
  3. Our Spirit is the Designated Survivor. It came before our physical/ earthly creation and it remains through eternity.
  4. Our Spirit serves as the backup generator. It is the core of who we are, and cannot be broken by man, only refined by the experiences God sees us through.
  5. Our Spirit is a direct reflection of God living within us.

So, what does my spirit have to with my mental stability?

Your spirit, when properly fed and nurtured, is always working on your behalf, in your favor, and for your good. It is in constant communication with God, prompting Him to send comfort when you are hurting, guidance when you are lost, help when you are helpless, strength when you are weak, but, most of all, your spirit talks to God when you cannot. Keeping your spirit healthy is important to your mental stability because your will, your drive, your ambition are all embedded in your spirit. It is difficult to fight this battle with a defeated, disconnected spirit.
